Society Payment Gateway vs Direct Bank Transfer
Society payment gateway vs direct bank transfer
A direct bank transfer moves money cheaply but leaves the treasurer to identify the flat, bill, and period. A society payment gateway starts from the bill, keeps that identity through checkout, and posts a signed confirmation back to the ledger. The practical difference is reconciliation—not merely whether the resident can use UPI.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Gateway from the bill | Direct NEFT/IMPS/UPI |
|---|---|---|
| Knows which bill was paid | Yes | Usually manual |
| Resident enters a narration | No | Often |
| Confirmation source | Signed provider callback | Bank statement |
| Automatic ledger posting | Yes | No, unless imported and matched |
| Handles offline exceptions | Alongside manual recording | Entirely manual |
| KYC requirement | Provider onboarding | Bank account opening only |
When direct transfer still makes sense
Keep direct transfer available for unusually large payments, residents with accessibility constraints, or temporary gateway outages. The treasurer should record it against the actual bill with the bank reference; otherwise the society ledger and bank balance diverge.
Why hosted checkout is safer than sharing a UPI number
A message containing “new society UPI” can be impersonated. Starting from an authenticated bill gives the resident context: society, flat, billing period, and exact outstanding amount. Cashfree then collects payment credentials in its hosted interface.
The society should still publish an official fallback account through an authenticated notice and require a reference for manual matching.
What about fees?
Payment method and merchant terms determine provider charges. The committee should obtain a written Cashfree commercial schedule and decide whether any permitted fee is absorbed or disclosed. Plinth's subscription policy is separate: it does not take a platform percentage of society collection.
Frequently asked questions
Should we disable bank transfer after launching online payment? Not immediately. Pilot the gateway, document exceptions, and narrow manual methods gradually.
Does a transfer screenshot prove receipt? No. Use the bank credit or signed gateway confirmation as the source of truth.
Can a gateway eliminate every reconciliation task? It automates payments initiated from a bill. Direct credits and offline instruments still need controlled recording.
