Resident: manage your directory privacy

The society directory lets neighbours find each other. What you share is your choice — your phone number is hidden unless you decide to share it.

Choosing what to share

1. Open /directory and go to your own entry, or open your profile.
2. Set visibility per field.

What each choice means:

You do not have to publish your number to be reachable. Other residents can contact you through the app without ever seeing it, which is the better default for most people.

Correcting your details

You can correct your own entry — name spelling, contact details, vehicle numbers. Do it directly rather than asking the committee, and update it when anything changes.

If something you cannot edit is wrong — your flat number, your owner or tenant status — tell your committee admin. You are entitled to have inaccurate personal data corrected.

Adding family members

Adults living in your flat can be added so the gate and the committee know who lives there. This matters in an emergency and for visitor approvals.

Children should not be added to a society-wide directory. If your society asks, push back — a child's personal data needs verifiable parental consent and has no place in a directory other residents can browse.

What the committee can see

More than other residents, and for legitimate reasons: your owner or tenant status for billing and governance, your emergency contact, your vehicle details for parking, and any household help registered against your flat.

The committee should not be circulating any of that, and should not hold identity documents beyond what the members' register and transfer process require.

What your society should never do

If any of these are happening, raise it with your committee:

• Circulating a PDF or Excel of the directory to a WhatsApp group. Once out, it is on every phone permanently and beyond recall.
• Sharing resident contacts with vendors or brokers. That is outside the purpose the data was collected for.
• Publishing your number when you have not opted in.
• Listing children with names and details.

If a bulk list has already been circulated, ask the committee to stop the practice and to adopt a written data policy. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act you can also ask for your own details to be corrected or removed from the optional directory.

When you move out

Your directory entry is deactivated as part of the move-out process, along with your gate access and any household help registered against your flat. Check it has happened — this is the step societies most often miss.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to share my phone number with the whole society? No. It is opt-in. Neighbours can reach you in-app without seeing your number.

Can I stay out of the directory entirely? You can decline to share contact details. You cannot be left off the statutory register of members, which is a legal record and serves a different purpose.

Can other residents see whether I own or rent? That is committee-level information by default, not visible to other residents.

Who can see my emergency contact? The committee and the gate — never other residents. It exists so someone can be reached if there is a problem at your flat.

My details are wrong. Can I fix them? Yes, edit your own entry. For flat number or ownership status, ask your committee admin — you have a right to have inaccurate data corrected.

Someone shared a spreadsheet of all residents. What can I do? Ask the committee to stop and to adopt a written data policy. You can ask for your own details to be removed from the optional directory.
